WELCOME TO THE EXPEDITION!

WE ARE A TEAM OF SCIENTISTS SET OUT TO IMAGE THE 3D INTERNAL STRUCTURE OF AXIAL VOLCANO IN THE NE PACIFIC OCEAN.

Please follow our updates and social media, get to know our scientists, and learn about this fascinating deep-sea volcanic system!

Thanks for joining us, the Axial3D Team!

Protected Species

Protecting the local species and wildlife

Joining us on board the ship during the expedition are a dedicated team of Protected Species Observers (PSOs). Their job is to monitor and document the local wildlife throughout the expedition, and to notify us of any species that come too close to the ship.

With many species in the NE Pacific Ocean considered "endangered", it is very important to ensure that our activity does not disturb or impact the local residents, especially those sensitive to acoustic signals in the water column e.g. whales and dolphins.

Around the clock monitoring using cameras, long-range binoculars, night-vision and acoustic instruments in the water, means that our PSOs are continually aware of any nearby species. This comes with the added benefit of them being able to capture some wonderful photographs!

We will continue to add more photos of the marine life and wildlife that the PSOs observe throughout the expedition.
